이 유전자는 O-linked glycans에서 core-1 structure(Thomsen-Friedenreich 항원으로도 알려짐)의 합성을 촉매하는 Core 1 β1,3-galactosyltransferase 1과 유사한 II형 막관통 단백질(Type II transmembrane protein)을 암호화합니다.

이 유전자 산물 자체에는 galactosyltransferase 활성이 없으며, 대신 Core 1 β1,3-galactosyltransferase 1의 접힘(folding), 안정성(stability) 및 완전한 효소 활성(full activity)에 필요한 분자 샤페론(molecular chaperone)으로 작용합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Tn 증후군(Tn syndrome)과 관련이 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이(alternatively spliced transcript variants)가 확인되었습니다.
